Welcome to the Year 2 class page! Year 2 is an important year as we prepare and work hard for SATs but we also have lots of fun learning new things each day.
This term we will be busy getting to know our new teachers and the expectations for Year 2.
We hope you enjoy the games and ideas included to help and support with learning at home. This page will also give you an insight into the curriculum covered in Year 2.
Year 2 Content
Year 2 English
English skills are used in all of our subjects and so we practice many of these skills every day through handwriting, reading, writing and spelling.
This term we will be writing our own story based on ‘Troll Swap’. This will give the children the chance to use all of the skills they have developed over the unit; including expanded noun phrases, using a range of punctuation and using conjunctions to extend their sentences. We will also study ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ and use this as a starting point to research owls and analyse the features of an information text, before writing our own Owl Factfile.
We have a big focus on reading in Year 2, through daily guided reading sessions and 1:1 readers. We are also enjoying some ‘Drop Everything and Read’ time in class when we can to ensure we develop a love of reading. We would ask that you support your child at home by reading with them each night for just 10 minutes and signing their reading log so they can earn dojo points and rewards.
The following websites will support your child’s learning in English:
Visit https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/freeIndex.htm to play phonics games with your children. There are also vocabulary and comprehension games to support reading at home

Year 2 Maths
In Autumn term, we will focus on place value in detail; using lots of apparatus to support (numicon, base 10 and cubes to name a few). We will also look at addition and subtraction and apply these skills to reasoning questions and problem solving and relate them to money and measure.
We also focus on basic skills in Maths continually throughout the year; including:
· counting in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in 10s from any number, forward and backward (and relating these to the 2, 5 and 10 timetable)
· recognising the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (10s, 1s)
· identifying, representing and estimating numbers using different representations, including the number line
· comparing and ordering numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
· reading and writing numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
· using place value and number facts to solve problems

Across the Curriculum
We have had a busy start to Year 2, covering a great deal already! We are currently investigating what plants need to survive and stay healthy (using cress seeds). We will then go on to look at the seven life processes for living, non-living and dead – we will be going on a minibeast hunt! In Geography we located the 4 countries of the United Kingdom and compared Liverpool to London. We had lots of fun creating our own Liverpool and London skylines! We will be developing our understanding of Bonfire Night and the Gunpowder Plot and doing lots of roleplay to support us with this. This half term we will look forward to rustling up a storm in the kitchen during our cookery lessons. We will be planning, making and evaluating our own fruit kebabs – yum!
