Welcome to the Year 2 class page! Year 2 is an important year as we prepare and work hard for SATs but we also have lots of fun learning new things each day.
This term we will be busy getting to know our new teachers and the expectations for Year 2.
We hope you enjoy the games and ideas included to help and support with learning at home. This page will also give you an insight into the curriculum covered in Year 2.
Year 2 Content
Year 2 English
English skills are used in all of our subjects and so we practice many of these skills every day through handwriting, reading, writing and spelling.
This term we will be working towards planning and writing our own story based on the text ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward. We will look to create our own characters and events. This will give the children the chance to use their imagination and all of the skills they have developed over the unit; including expanded noun phrases, using a range of punctuation and using conjunctions to extend their sentences. To extend the children’s learning in this area we will read ‘The Dragonsitter Disasters’ as our class novel.
We will also study ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ by Jan Oke. We will be writing from Major Glad’s point of view as well as a number of different forms across the unit.
We have a big focus on reading in Year 2, through daily guided reading sessions and 1:1 readers. We would ask that you support your child at home by reading with them each night for just 10 minutes and signing their reading log so they can earn dojo points and rewards.

Year 2 Maths
This term, we will focus on multiplication and division in detail; using a variety of methods and resources to support (numicon, base 10 and cubes to name a few). We will also look at applying this to our unit of measure and begin to look at fractions.
After half term, we will look at geometry whilst focusing on properties of shape as well as position and direction.
We also focus on basic skills in Maths continually throughout the year; including:
· Developing our times tables knowledge (2’s, 5’s and 10’s)
· Applying the knowledge to solve a range of problems throughout our units.
