Year 6 Content
Year 6 Religious Education
Religious Education in as the heart of everything we do in Year 6. As well as our weekly Come and See lessons, we take part in daily Collective Worship. This is a time for us to reflect on the day that we have and the Gospel Values.
We will start the term by looking at the theme of loving. Through this topic, we will explore the story of the Prodigal Son and how this links to the Gospel Values of forgiveness and unconditional love.
We then move on to exploring vocation and commitment. During this topic, the children will considered the meaning of both of these words and think about that they need to do to be committed to their vocation.
Year 6 English
In Year 6, we will spend time building up the skills taught in Year 5. To start, we will be reading ‘Star of Fear, Star of Hope’. This book is written from the perspective a young girl during WW2. We will be perfecting our skills of expanded noun phrases, passive voice and direct speech.
At Sacred Heart we use the Oxford Owl website to help encourage our pupils to read. We have given your child a class login and password to access the Oxford Owl website, it can be found at the front of their Learning Story Book.

Year 6 Maths
We will be begin the year by recapping our place value knowledge of numbers to 10,000,000. Next, we will develop our calculating skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. From here, we will focus on building our knowledge of fractions and manipulating them to solve reasoning and problem solving questions.
Pupils at Sacred Heart follow the Liverpoool Maths Planning, which has been devised and developed by members School Improvement Liverpool. The Liverpool Maths team developed this document to support effective implementation of the New National Curriculum.
In order to develop fluency in mathematics, children need to secure a conceptual understanding and efficiency in procedural approaches. This resources highlights the imporance of making conenctions between concrete materials, models and images, mathematical language, symbolic representations and prior learning.
There is a key focus on the teaching sequence and ensure that children have opportunities to practise the key skills whilst building the understanding and knowlegde to apply these skills into more complex application activities.
This programme also provides a list of key, basic skills that children must continually practise as they forma the building blocks of mathematical learning.
