Welcome to our Year 4 class page. Our class page is here to support both children and parents, and give you lots of useful information about what is going on in our wonderful class!

Curriculum Maps

English

Autumn Term

During Autumn Term the children will be focusing on two books called ‘The Whale’ and ‘Leaf’.

Throughout ‘The whale’ the children will be writing a setting narrative, using the book as a stimulus for imaginative ideas and then they will learn how to write a newspaper report. Next, the children will read ‘Leaf’ where they will work towards writing an outsider narrative and an information report.

Spring Term

In the second half term, the children will write a myth narrative and an information text whilst reading Arthur and the Golden Rope. The children will then move on to the Lost Happy Endings where they will write their own twisted narrative and also a a persuasive letter.

Summer Term

During summer term, the children will read ‘The Journey’ where they will concentrate on writing a refugee narrative and a diary. Finally, whilst reading ‘Manfish’ the children will write an invention narrative and a biography.

Maths

Autumn Term

In Mathematics, we will be focusing on a number of topics, through our mastery approach, including: number, shape, space and measure as well as problem solving. We will look at real life situations and how maths relates to these situations. We rely heavily on knowing our multiplication and related division facts, using and applying these skills to solve a wide range of problems throughout the Y4 maths curriculum and also through a multiplication test - so plenty of practice on TT Rockstars is recommended.

Spring Term

This term in mathematics, year 4 will be focusing on multiplication and division, fractions decimals and percentage, as well as measurement. We will look at real life situations and how maths relates to these situations. We rely heavily on knowing our multiplication and related division facts, using and applying these skills to solve a wide range of problems throughout the Y4 maths curriculum and also through a multiplication test - so plenty of practice on TT Rockstars is recommended.

Summer Term

During summer term the children will be learning about: Statistics, geometry, measure of time and data analysis. The children will embed their knowledge of calculation using number facts and properties to help them to problem solve.

Science

Autumn Term

In Science, we will be studying States of Matter and exploring how the properties move and act differently. We will also investigate if items can be changed from one state of matter to another and if it is a reversible process. Secondly, in Science, we will be studying electricity and exploring how simple series circuits are constructed. We will also investigate insulating and conducting properties of a range of materials. As part of this unit, children will explore electrical appliances, mains and battery power.

Spring Term

In Science, we will be studying ‘animals including humans’ and the children will learn about the key functions of the digestive system, as well as understanding the importance of keeping their teeth clean. The children will also be learning about living things and their habitat and within this unit they will explore a variety of ways to identify, sort, group and classify living things. They learn how animals are split into 'vertebrates' and 'invertebrates' and begin to consider the differences between living things within these classifications.

Summer Term

This term in Science, the children will be exploring ‘Sound’ and how sound is made through lots of practical activities to embed their understanding. The children will move on to Living Things ad their Habitats, deepening their knowledge and understanding an they will focus on the environment and conservation.

RE

Autumn Term

During this term the children will learn and reflect upon their own families and how this link to Jesus’s family. They will then move on to a new topic ‘Called’ where they will link their own memories and celebrations and choices and what it means to be called by God.

Spring Term

In RE, the children will be learning all about our community at Sacred Heart and who belongs to our Parish. The children will also share ideas of how they celebrate and come together as a community with their families. The children will also be learning about giving and receiving and they will reflect on how necessary to ‘give and take’ is in a family, a class, a school and any group. 

Summer Term

Within summer term, the children will focus on new life, linking to their own experiences and what this means to them and why new life is so important. They will then learn about building bridges and why it is important to build bridges within our every day lives. Finally, the children will learn about God’s people and why some people do extraordinary things.

Geography & History

Autumn Term

The children will learn all about rivers in their geography lessons; their place in the water cycle, the name and location of major rivers and how they are used. The children will also expand on their geographical skills such as map reading through practical work and going on a trip to visit the River Mersey.

Throughout history, this half term the children will explore how children’s lives have changed. The children will learn how children’s spare time, health and work have changed throughout history. They will learn about a day in the life of a working child and the significance of Lord Shaftesbury and his impact. The children will understand the historical significance of this era and what it means for them today.

Spring

Within our history lessons, the children will learn all about how hard it was to invade and settle in Britain while exploring artefacts to make their own inferences. The children’s focus will be on the Anglo-Saxon invasion and the Viking raids linking this to what the AngloSaxons beliefs were and how this led to the raise of Christianity.

Throughout the geography lessons, the children will learn about ‘Where does our food come from’? They will focus on the global impact of the food trade and the benefits and disadvantages to importing food. Relating this to our school and local area, the children will learn about where our school dinners come from, linking this to the benefits of importing local food versus global importing of food. 

Summer

This term, the children will be extending their knowledge of different societies whilst focusing on the Vikings. This will explore the struggle for Britain between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings and we will investigate whether the Vikings were raiders or settlers making historian conclusions.

During this term, the children will be focusing on the link between biomes and climate. They will focus on map work and they will locate the Amazon rainforest, explaining how the vegetation in a tropical rainforest is influenced by the two tropics. Finally, they also explore the lives of the people who live in the Amazon rainforest and how this impacts the locality and global influences.

Assessment

In Year 4, we undertake regular, termly assessment throughout the year, in line with the assessment cycle for our school. This is to ensure we are monitoring progression and directing support as needed. 

In Year 4, there is a statutory Times Tables Test that the pupils will undertake in the Summer Term. The children need to be able to recall multiplication facts quickly and this can be practised with regular use of Times Tables Rockstars.

P.E Kit

Autumn

The children will advance their motor skills and coordination through tag-rugby and football. They will learn how to pass effectively to another teammate and also how to pass with accuracy using the correct position to receive a pass.

Spring

This half-term the Year 4 children will be taking part in swimming on a Wednesday morning, the children will be learning various swimming techniques with a alongside keeping themselves in the water.

PE takes place every Wednesday afternoon in Year 4. Please send your child in wearing the appropriate PE kit (white T-shirt, black/grey or red shorts/leggings, plain black pumps or trainers).

Summer

In PE, the children will be improving their skills in rounders, athletics and gymnastics. They will also be working on completing a daily mile and creating opportunities to work on our mental health.

Reading and Homework

Please encourage your child to read every night for around 5-10 minutes and their reading log needs to be signed and returned to class daily. Children will be provided with a reading book on a Friday that is appropriate for their own progress and a reading for pleasure book of their own choice. Children should be explaining what they are reading, and should be able to give a brief summary about what the book is about.

Homework and Spellings are given every Friday. A key focus this term for homework is timetables and reading. Children’s homework is to support their independence in reflecting and recalling what has been learnt in the classroom in order to apply it to their work independently.
