Year 6

Hello Everyone and welcome to Year 6.

We have so many exciting learning and adventures planned this year, so keep coming back to the Year 6 Class Page for important information and to see what we have been getting up to.

Year 6 Team:

Class Teacher: Miss Kayayan

Hello Everyone, my name is Miss Kayayan. As well as teaching Year 6, I am the KS2 Lead, R.E. Lead, Maths Lead, RSHE Lead and Student and ECT Mentor.

I have a cute, fluffy, black dog called Tilly and I play the flute and the piano. I also really enjoy singing. One of my favourite hobbies is crafting. I love working at Sacred Heart School because we have the most wonderful kind, caring and considerate children. We are one big, happy family.

Class Teacher: Miss McLaughlin

Hello. I am Miss McLaughlin. I’m really excited to be the newest member of the Sacred Heart family. I absolutely love animals, getting active in P.E and I am so excited to be apart of this amazing community. My favourite things to do are listening to music and walking my dog, Bruno.

Teaching Assistant: Mrs. Porter

Hello, I am Mrs Porter and I love working at Sacred Heart and with our Year 6 children as we are the heart of our Kenny Fields community. In my spare time, I enjoy going to the theatre and attending concerts. I also thoroughly enjoy watching football, especially the WSL (Women’s Soccer League); I hold a season ticket to watch Arsenal ladies.

English

In English, each half term we will study a different text which will act as a stimulus for our writing. Please see below for the text we will be studying and the range of writing genres that will be focused upon.

Autumn Term

To link with our topic of WWII, the children will be exploring the stories of Anne Frank and Rose Blanche. The children will be writing a diary entry where they will develop their understanding of informal language. They will then go on to write a bravery award speech which will explore the use of a more formal writing style.

A Story Like the Wind also ties in to our topic of migration which will be studied during Autumn 2. The children will extend their knowledge of refugeeism and how people across the world seek safety because of conflict in their countries. The children will develop their tenses through writing a flashback narrative and newspaper report.

Spring Term

On the Origin of species ties in with our science topic during Spring 1. The children will explore the life of Charles Darwin and use the knowledge gained to write a discovery narrative and explanation text. During this term, the children will expand their range of sentence structures and punctation types.

During reading The Ways of the Wolf, the children will develop their writing by learning how to present documented information. They will use a range of formal and informal language as well as developing their understanding of active and passive voice. They will also write a balanced argument ensuring that a range of viewpoints are presented.

Summer Term

During Shackleton’s Journey, the children will write an endurance narrative and a biography. These two varying genres of writing will support the children with developing their knowledge of a range of tense types and vocabulary.

To finish the year, we will read Hansel and Gretel. The children will write a dual narrative which will allow them to explore the use of direct and indirect speech in their writing. Our final piece of writing will be a persuasive letter in which the children will attempt to convince the audience of their viewpoint.
